About the project

St Edward’s School wanted an illustrated map of its grounds to support fundraising for the Field of Dreams project, a major development within the school.

The site covered a large area and there were many different buildings, facilities and details to include. Unlike the school’s other promotional illustrations, the emphasis here was less on following an established visual identity and more on bringing the content of the map to life.

The approach

I visited the school to get a feel for the grounds and discuss what might be included. Working from a list supplied by the school, I developed a large illustrated scene looking across the field, with the buildings shown front-on.

There was plenty to discover in the detail: sports facilities, a weather station, beehives, cows and an owl, as well as a rope obstacle course. I also included two characters from The Wind in the Willows, a reference to the fact that its author, Kenneth Grahame, attended the school.

The school wanted something more colourful and separate from its usual communications, so I had room to take a different approach to the illustration.

The result

The finished map brings together the buildings, activities and smaller details that make up the school grounds in one expansive illustration. It was created for use in support of the Field of Dreams fundraising project.
