The brief

The Charles Dickens Museum wanted a family trail to introduce children and visitors to some of the women in Dickens’s life and work. The trail takes visitors around the house, using stories, objects and activities to explore the lives of women who were part of Dickens’s world.

It needed its own visual identity, while being practical for the museum to print in-house as well as professionally.

The approach

I developed the visual identity and designed the trail, working from text supplied by the museum. The illustrations included portraits of historical figures Rhena Pollard and Angela Burdett-Coutts, alongside drawings of objects connected with the house and its history.

The layout and illustrations were developed together to make the information inviting and easy to follow. A winding dotted line guides visitors around the trail, linking the different sections and activities. Bold typography, a limited colour palette and simple illustrations give it a distinctive character, while the predominantly white background keeps it economical to print.

The result

The finished trail gives children and families an interactive way to explore the museum and discover the women connected with Dickens. It combines historical information with questions, observation activities and small challenges along the route.

Working on interpretation or a non-fiction book?

I illustrate interpretation panels, exhibitions, learning resources and non-fiction books, researched with the people who know the subject.
